Hello, fellow crafters!
Today, I’m excited to share the saga of my search for the ideal scrunchie—a journey filled with trial and error, frustration, and, ultimately, triumph. If you’ve ever struggled to find the right technique or material for a project, you’ll certainly relate to this story.
The Sewn Scrunchie Dilemma
My adventure began with sewn scrunchies. I eagerly dove into my stash of quilting cotton, confident that these fabrics would make beautiful hair accessories. They were so beautiful! They could be whipped up fairly easily and quickly, and the ones I saw my favourite YouTubers making (notably Jess from OklaRoots) seemed useful and stylish.

However, reality hit hard when I tried to use them. I realized that quilting cotton, while lovely, was too slippery for hair. My scrunchies kept sliding out, and to make matters worse, sewing them closed by hand proved to be an incredibly fiddly process. After several attempts, it became clear that sewn scrunchies were not the solution for me.
The Velvet Yarn Experiment
Determined not to give up, I turned to crocheting. Velvet yarn seemed like a perfect choice—soft, luxurious, and visually appealing. I started by using double crochet techniques, but no matter how I tried, the scrunchies ended up with bare patches when expanded. Thicker yarns like Loops & Threads’ Sweet Snuggles offered better coverage but came with their own set of problems: shedding fur everywhere each time they were used.

In a bid to solve these issues, I tried crocheting velvet yarn in a tube around an elastic. While this method provided full coverage, the resulting fabric was too stiff, causing the scrunchie to lose its scrunching effect.

Frustrated but not defeated, I kept searching for that elusive perfect pattern.
A YouTube Revelation
Just as I was about to give up, I stumbled upon a YouTube channel, camrynscutecreations, featuring a video on making a 3-minute scrunchie. Skeptical from my previous attempts, I gave it a try. Surprisingly, this method turned out to be exactly what I needed! The furry yarn used in the video hid all the mistakes, knots, and even mostly concealed the elastic band—by this time, I had gotten smarter and was using colour-matching elastic bands.
Unable to find the recommended Go for Faux by Lion Brand Yarn, I picked up a similar yarn from Amazon. You can find the yarn I used here. The end result was fantastic. With 35 half-double crochet stitches (a slight modification from the 30 recommended in the video), I managed to create luxurious scrunchies that were both functional and beautiful. And the best part? Each ball of yarn (about 35 yards) yielded 11 scrunchies!

I found a fur yarn with more colour varieties, which came in the same 2-pack for only a few more dollars. My favourite was this unicorn colour!

Ready for Market
I’m thrilled to announce that these scrunchies will be available at my next market. They feel luxurious, look fantastic, and stay put—everything a scrunchie should be. This journey taught me that perseverance pays off and that the perfect pattern is out there, sometimes in the most unexpected places.
Thank you for joining me on this crafting adventure. I hope my experiences inspire you to keep experimenting and never give up on finding the perfect solution for your projects.
Happy crafting!
